The story of Alice Blue

Introducing our interior design and inspiration blog

Hello, I'm Sophie,

Welcome to The Wanderings of Alice Blue an interior design blog for Alice Blue Interiors. I founded Alice Blue in 2022, as a boutique interior design company based in a little mews studio in Waterloo. We work in London and across the UK on the most wonderful projects for our clients.

Who is Alice Blue?

As a UK-based design studio, I have a deep love for eclectic architectural heritage, history and interior spaces and this is a place where I wanted to share what inspires me, our designs and feeds my soul. I have a love for historic homes, whimsical topiary hedges, crazy floors, a really good front door and lots and lots of tea. I'm inspired by modern and classical design alike, I believe that a home should reflect its owners and have its own unique personality and character. I embrace different design styles and aesthetics and feel that every space has a story to tell.

Why Alice Blue?

The meaning of our name Alice Blue comes from a colour, one of my favourites, it's a pale white ice blue. Cool, calm and tranquil. It's a very 'me' colour with several aspects of my home already painted in this colour before I even knew the name! Having finally decided to take the leap and set up our studio I wanted a business name that sounded like a slightly cool and quirky friend who wanted to share their love for all interiors and design. Alice Blue felt like the perfect fit.

Our Woburn Project

Two great loves - Alice Blue and a stunning door

"I can either run the country or I can attend to Alice, but I cannot possibly do both."

The colour name itself derives from Alice Roosevelt Longworth (daughter of US President Teddy) who in 1902 at her 'social debut' wore this colour dress to a ball. She became an instant fashion icon and important public figure to her father's presidency across the US. I was instantly drawn to her as she was a bit of a 'wild child' by early 20th-century standards.

Alice seemingly trail-blazed for her generation with her outspoken personality, and her pet snake, stayed out late partying and was even seen placing a bet at the bookies! Shocking I know! I felt drawn to her strong independent character, sense of self and sense of humour, a young woman with an outlook far ahead of her time. Her father is quoted as saying: "I can either run the country or I can attend to Alice, but I cannot possibly do both."

Drawing inspiration from my travels

Long before I founded Alice Blue Interiors, for almost 10 years I have kept a visual diary on Instagram of my travels at home and abroad, of places, design and things that inspired me.
